I'm always busy with musical projects. When I'm working on something I usually try to focus on that one project but there is always a new idea just around the corner. Rather than a distraction, most of the time it is helpful because it gives perspective. It's a refreshing time away from the main job. This last two years have been the same. The main project was the new Kyla and his the Keys album. Kyla and I kept working on it episodically, we had to find the time, and time really flies these days!
At the same time I found myself rediscovering the guitar. It's always been my main instrument. The one I started playing at the age of 16, trying to emulate Robert Smith and Angus Young. I wouldn't call myself a great guitarist. I'm technically limited but I enjoy challenging myself from time to time. Two years ago I started watching Rick Beato's YouTube channel. That guy's passion for music reignited in me the taste for experimenting. Scales, modes, I enjoyed having a go at the less obvious riffs, the slightly odd articulations and other interesting things you can do with a guitar.
That led me to complete a full instrumental album while working on the KATK project. I put together a couple of videos to accompany some of the tracks, one of those reached quite a few views, even though I suspect it had more to do with the use of a Buster Keaton film than with my mild guitar pyrotechnics!
And now, finally, the new Kyla and the Keys album is ready. And we love it. Mixing it was a bit of a beast (I might write another entry on that some time) but it's done! Ten songs, soon available for streaming, download and even a limited number of CDs. The release date is planned for the 1st March, if everything goes to plan. Videos will follow too.
In the meantime I'm already craving for more guitar playing. I've already got a few tracks for another instrumental album but before that I'll be soon reuniting with my friend Glenn Gibbs of (O) for a series of live shows where I will be able to indulge in some actual playing in front of people. Scary. Exciting.
Anyway, in. The meantime I thought I'd show you the new KATK cover. I love it!
